J. ROBERT FLETCHER joined his beloved wife, Kae, on Monday, May 25, 2009. Bob was born in Centerville Iowa on August 21, 1915 and raised in Wilmette, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois and was a licensed professional engineer.  In 1947 he moved with his family to Huntington as a part of J.H. Fletcher & Co. With his father and brother, he designed underground roof support systems for coal and limestone mines and built a manufacturing plant in Huntington. J. H.  Fletcher & Co. has since grown into a premier international manufacturer of underground roof support systems. His equipment has revolutionized mine safety over the past sixty years. He served as chairman of the United Way, the March of Dimes, the YMCA, and various church committees at First United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the board of directors of Cammack Children’s Center, Huntington Federal Savings and Loan, Columbia Gas Systems, and West Virginia Wesleyan College where he was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. He was also a member of the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Huntington, and in 2007 was inducted into the City of Huntington Wall of Fame. He has generously supported Marshall University with special interest in the engineering school and the H.E.L.P. program. He was an optimistic, generous, humble man who was always looking to the future and trying to devise ways for others to help themselves. You could go to talk to him about something and if he didn’t agree with you he could turn your opinion into his opinion and you would walk out thinking it was your idea. He often expressed how fortunate he was for living in the times that he did. Bob and Kae spent many summers cruising the Georgian Bay with their family and friends for sailing was one of their favorite pastimes. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ruth Fletcher, his brother Bill Fletcher, and the light of his life his wife Kae. He is survived by his daughters Lyn Reeves, and Sally Duncan (Sam), and his son Jim (Gerda), his eight grandchildren Blake Sypher (Dunja), Shelley Theriault (Bob), Rod Duncan (Sheri), Kathy Fletcher-Littrell (Jack), Robin Mankins (Larry), Wendy Franzen (Tim), Chris Duncan (Laura), and Julia Poth (Adam), and his fifteen great-grandchildren Jelena and Sasha Sypher, Virginia and West Theriault, Amanda, Matthew, and Ashley Duncan, Lily and Jay Littrell, Molly and Sally Mankins, Will and Hannah Franzen, Joseph and Andrew Duncan. The family will receive visitors from 5pm until 7pm at Klingle-Carpenter Mortuary on Wednesday, May 27 with services at 11am on Thursday at the mortuary. Donations may be made in his memory to HOSPICE of Huntington 1101 Sixth Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701 or the charity of your choice.
